He was messing around with spatial arrangements.
I reckon it looks very Hobbity - thirty years before Peter Jackson put it on film.

I like the pyramid room, because it reminds me of some fairy tale book illustrations I enjoyed a lot when I was little. They were also made up room designs and had very cosy looks, like this one.
