Am Original näher dran wäre wohl:
"To him, progress was too much of a surprise" bzw.
"To him, progress came with a vengeance ..."
Lustig wäre auch: "Progress had quite an impact on HIM ..." - das wäre aber ne andere Wortspielvariante.
PS.: Oh Gott, ich hoffe ich begebe mich da nicht in ein Mienenfeld! Die englischen Kollegen könnten mich überfallen, wenn sie diese Übersetzungsversuche lesen. ;)
Na, eine Version könnte ja immerhin dabei sein ...
PPS.: Andererseits will ich auch nicht blöd dreinreden! Man kann es im Prinzip schon so lassen, denn der Sinn kommt dann schon rüber. Die Alternativen sind halt sozusagen "umgänglicher" ...
