The slick, vanilla cgi effects of cinema these days is still as dead and sterile as it was in the beginning of cgi. All that has changed is that the image is more crisp and there are more details. Still, the orchestrated camera movements and the spectacular attack action scenes in superhero movies seem rigid and smoothed out like a totally over-photoshopped Vanity cover.
I haven't seen hereditary yet. Last movie that gave me a mild fright was the latest IT movie.
I agree I think the handmade SPFX is what gave the monsters some authenticity and also the actors did not have to act into green screens. And you could tell how some screens were authentic.
There are occasionally good ones in recent years, but very few of them have anything to offer beyond cheap jump-scares. "Hereditary" was a nice exception as well as "It follows".
But I'm really glad that we live in an age where you basically have the entire library of early horror films at your fingertips. The Copyright of a lot of them has expired already, so you can watch Tarrantula and other gems for free. I really love those old, handmade effects.

That movie scared the hell out of me when I was 12.
