OMG you bad boy! no!!! hoe cakes....hm....actually that's a great question. they're like pancakes, and were common in the 1700s and 1800s.

sigh. great. ok ok ok. i'll look up the etymology. hang on.

oh. that was interesting. they used to be baked on hoes (the farming tool, not the hooker) over an open fire. so you could cook it while you were at work.
