"Black magic" originated from the notion that shadows and everything that happens in the dark is metaphorically called "black". There are many more examples: black holes, black markets, blacklists and whitelists (again, simply because of the 'in the dark' or 'in open day' notion) ...

A blackbird is called blackbird, simply because it's feathers are indeed black. Many more examples...

I think this entire discussion around the language is tackling the issue from the wrong standpoint entirely. Instead of changing how we speak about colors, we should see that people with dark skintones are never again called "black" in any context. Same should go with the pejorative terms "whitey" for caucasian people, "redskin" for native Americans and so on.

To me it seems that people quickly (and out of fear of being attacked themselves) just take in the weak argumentation and poor solutions by this movement and spread them without critical thinking.

We still celebrate mothers day, although it was hugely taken up by the N.azi-movement, changing the whole connotation (the women as the preserver of the German population) and was subsequently tinted by that.

Should we stop speaking about "black music", because it uses a seemingly pejorative term? Why do we still speak about "black culture", if the word black has negative connotations?
