@Genevieve:

There are also "positive" examples for the word black. In German, a company is "in black numbers" when it makes sufficient profit compared to the expanses and in turn it is in "red numbers" when it has more expanses than profit.

"Black magic" originated from the notion that shadows and everything that happens in the dark is metaphorically called "black". There are many more examples: black holes, black markets, blacklists and whitelists (again, simply because of the 'in the dark' or 'in open day' notion) ...

A blackbird is called blackbird, simply because it's feathers are indeed black. Many more examples...

I think this entire discussion around the language is tackling the issue from the wrong standpoint entirely. Instead of changing how we speak about colors, we should see that people with dark skintones are never again called "black" in any context. Same should go with the pejorative terms "whitey" for caucasian people, "redskin" for native Americans and so on.

To me it seems that people quickly (and out of fear of being attacked themselves) just take in the weak argumentation and poor solutions by this movement and spread them without critical thinking.

We still celebrate mothers day, although it was hugely taken up by the N.azi-movement, changing the whole connotation (the women as the preserver of the German population) and was subsequently tinted by that.

Should we stop speaking about "black music", because it uses a seemingly pejorative term? Why do we still speak about "black culture", if the word black has negative connotations?

hi everyone. thanks for your comments!
PAM - yes, probably true.
Pauer - yes, i bet he does.
Seplund Petra - omg i didn't see that. what a great observation. yikes1
ArmerArmin - yes, precisely.
Matze_malt - you noticed it - he's literally the only person of color in the company. maybe that's what they should change, rather than having a day of appreciation. how about every day having equality? crazy idea? and the rest of what you say is true. we have to reexamine how we use the word "black" and how deeply ingrained racism is in our everyday lives.

What an event ...
... and, "Real world!" - all the nice white colleagues (no Asians, no Indians or Indo-Brits, no Hispanics ...). But too: What a future, what a "horizon" ... for this employee?

>> event & horizon = "event horizon" ...

... will it be no longer allowed saying "BLACK wholes" - and have they to be renamed?

► Threatens the "RENAMING" to ...
... the traffic sign "ACCIDENT BLACKSPOT" | "Black Metal" | ♫ "Lady in Black" | Movie "Black Beauty" | warhammers 40K "Black Library" | "Bläck Fööss" from Cologne - or good old "Roy Black" (R.I.P.) ...?

Da wird´s einem doch "Schwarz vor den Augen" ...
... äh, darf man/*/frau das eigentlich noch sagen?

Sad but true – it´s not about paying respect to the real person. It´s just about pretending to be congruent to the moral attitude of the moment.
