Thanks for that, Mike. I am now (relatively) enlightened. Fact is, the picture is good enough to carry the general sense of the gag. It's nice to get the inside track on the joke, but it's genuinely funny without the details.

I've had the same experience with Bloom County, Doonesbury, and a lot of good political cartoons. You don't have to know all the details to get a sense of what the gag is if the art is good enough.
