The slick, vanilla cgi effects of cinema these days is still as dead and sterile as it was in the beginning of cgi. All that has changed is that the image is more crisp and there are more details. Still, the orchestrated camera movements and the spectacular attack action scenes in superhero movies seem rigid and smoothed out like a totally over-photoshopped Vanity cover.

I agree I think the handmade SPFX is what gave the monsters some authenticity and also the actors did not have to act into green screens. And you could tell how some screens were authentic.

But I'm really glad that we live in an age where you basically have the entire library of early horror films at your fingertips. The Copyright of a lot of them has expired already, so you can watch Tarrantula and other gems for free. I really love those old, handmade effects.
