this conversation made me laugh a lot. crowbar's comment about trying to improve something and accidentally removing the funny is a very familiar feeling (to me, and perhaps to a lot of us). one of the damnedest parts of cartooning is that you have no idea how other people will perceive something. i decided to just write cartoons that i think are funny, but then i often go back and try to see them as someone not-me, and realise i need to think like other people. but i can't. but i should. argh.

i got the joke and i like the art style. if you want to see some amazing cartoons that clearly went straight from the artist's head to paper without any regard for whether other people will understand them, try oglaf. it's the only time i've seen a Giraffe crossed with a centipede, which speaks in metaphors. However beware: it's often xrated, NSFW. not at all safe for work. but i still recommend him (her?) to cartoonists because the story-telling, sense of humor, and strange concepts make for some of the best and most original cartooning i've seen. here's a sample that is safe:

Very Cheers zeitgeist here, dude.doubletop.gif

I'm not sure if it's profound, but I'm glad the explanation helped!

I'm never sure if my cartoons make sense to other people. I sometimes start writing a strip, and as I try to improve it, I end up removing what made it funny in the first place... It's nice to get honest feedback, it really helps.

Well, let's say you think you might have cancer. You go to the doctor, you get tests, and you find out that you don't have cancer. It's great news! You go celebrate! You drink! So Crowbar and his friend are just skipping a few steps; they don't go to the doctor, they don't get tests, they just celebrate and drink. And every time they think of a new medical problem they don't have, they celebrate and drink some more.

Okay, you're right, it's not funny...
