About 4 thousand years ago, the Babylonian emperor Hammurabi's laws written for the first time the law has been turned into the woman's social status. The first shroud that looks like Burqa appeared with the Hittites.
But the real reason is men's fear from women who started production in the first ages, for the first time. So they were stopped "matriarchal" period which was continued thousands years and started the patriarchal period that still continue. So "reign of women" that they were kept on hand is over. Women were passed to passive status from active status.
Today also is added jealousy (in fact lack of self-confidence of men ) between the reasons.

For what I've heard, the reason why moslemic women shroud themself, is because of the crusades in the middle ages. They were hoping, that if the crusaders would not see how beautiful they were, they won't get raped by them. But the times have changed and they are still shrouded. And most of them probably do not know why and still cloth themself like that because the men are telling them to do so. So sad...
